James Cockburn Day – 2018

On Saturday, August 4, Rob Franklin, Manager of Planning Services for the Town of Cobourg performed a play about James Cockburn in front of Victoria Hall. James Cockburn (pronounced Co-burn) is an important historical figure since he was a father of Confederation and a resident of Cobourg and this would be the eleventh year that Rob has played the part of James Cockburn in a play.  However, the official James Cockburn day is Monday so the performance was repeated at the Sifton Cook centre on Monday. About 25 people showed up in the heat to watch the play –  it was a new one first performed last year. Another change this year is that the James Cockburn Society will now be… Read complete articleJames Cockburn Day – 2018

Statue of Wartime Female “Sparks” planned

Fern Blodgett Sunde could be called a heroine but she was certainly a trail-blazer – she was a Radio Operator during World War 2 when women were not allowed in the Canadian Navy, not even the Merchant Navy.  Not giving up on what she wanted to do, she signed on to a Norwegian ship and made 78 crossings of the Atlantic during the Battle of the Atlantic.  I’d call that heroic and certainly worth commemorating with a statue.  And that’s what Leona Woods wants to do, commission a statue of her and have it erected in a prominent place on Cobourg’s waterfront.  Leona has teamed up with Sudbury sculptor Tyler Fauvelle and together they made a presentation to Cobourg Council… Read complete articleStatue of Wartime Female “Sparks” planned

Four Exceptional Students Win Bursaries

Each year Marie Dressler Foundation awards bursaries of $1500 each to four students finishing high school in Northumberland and planning to go into tertiary education to prepare for a career in the arts.  Today, in a presentation inside the recently rebuilt Marie Dressler Museum, the winning students were presented with their cheques as well as a framed certificate (and a bouquet of flowers). The video below shows the presentation by Rick Miller (chair of the Foundation) and other board members.  The first winner in the video is Graham Beer – many will note that he is generally on the other side of the camera.  Witnessing the event were Foundation board members, parents of recipients, the media and a couple of… Read complete articleFour Exceptional Students Win Bursaries

Piping at Sunset Tradition Continues

The Cobourg Legion Pipes and Drums are continuing their new tradition – piping the sun down.  Once again this year in July and August, a lone piper will be piping at sunset on the East pier.  There will be no Piper on Tuesdays as it is practice night for the band and also they don’t want to compete with the performance by the Concert Band in the Bandshell.  The band decided to do this to increase Community awareness of their band in Cobourg.  See the photo and video below. The first night was Monday July 2 starting about 10 minutes before sunset (at 8:57) and continuing for about 10 minutes after.  Each member of the band will play four times… Read complete articlePiping at Sunset Tradition Continues

Cultural Plan finally gets going

At Council’s Committee of the Whole meeting on June 25, Council went into closed session to select the Steering committee for the Cultural Master Plan (see list below) and later approved awarding the contract for a consultant to MDB Insight for $64,890 (+HST).  The RFP for the plan is now available (see link below) so now we can get a good idea of what to expect.  Dean Hustwick said that there were 34 applications to sit on the steering committee which tells us that there is a lot of interest in the subject.  At least three key decisions have been deferred pending this plan: 1) What to do about the Park Theatre, if anything, 2) what to do with Dressler… Read complete articleCultural Plan finally gets going

Where has Marie Dressler’s picture gone

Because the Victoria Hall Volunteers didn’t like the picture of Marie Dressler in their meeting place, the Mayor had it removed from the Citizen’s Forum.  But Rick Miller, chair of the Marie Dressler Foundation, thinks that “as a part of Cobourg’s history, Marie Dressler should be honoured with a photograph in the Town’s national historic building”.  After all, the building belongs to the Town and its citizens and pictures should reflect the Town’s history and heritage.  One group should not have a veto over what is displayed.  On Monday night, Rick made a presentation to Council on this point.  What if he as a citizen didn’t particularly like the portrait of Lenah Fisher?  Would it then be removed?  Why then… Read complete articleWhere has Marie Dressler’s picture gone

Cooey Collectors Day

If you are familiar with Cobourg’s history, you’ll know that Cooey had a factory in Cobourg at what was then called Factory Creek on the corner of King West and Tremaine.  A park is now being established there and is called Cooey park.  The factory manufactured rifles which were known for their safety and quality but the business was sold to Winchester in 1961 and manufacturing moved out of Cobourg in 1979.  But Cooeys have not been forgotten and the Cobourg Trap and Skeet Club in conjunction with the Northumberland Pistol and Revolver Club are holding a Collectors Day on July 7th at their location on Highway 2 at Theatre Road.  It will feature vendors, a BBQ and displays of… Read complete articleCooey Collectors Day

Cobourg’s Highland Games – 2018

The weather was perfect – sunny but not too hot and the organization worked.  Entry was $20 at the gate but few complained.  The “Games” were Highland Dance competitions, Bag Pipe band competitions and the usual “heavy” events.  In addition there were vendors selling Scottish memorabilia and there was musical entertainment.  Once again the games were in Victoria Park and once again parking was at a premium.  Unlike the Waterfront Festival, there were no shuttle busses to remote parking.  The crowds seem to come despite the increase in entry fee so this should put the Highland Games organizers on a better footing.  In 2013, they asked the Town for a loan but didn’t get it (see link below) but at… Read complete articleCobourg’s Highland Games – 2018
