Cobourg Saxons Beach Rugby Festival

Despite the rain, the kids seemed to be having a good time on the East End of Cobourg’s beach today.  The Cobourg Saxons Rugby club staged a series of games for young rugby fans.  It was not publicized so the general public would not have been aware but then, it’s not really for spectators – its’ more a parents event.  However, watching little kids run around after the ball can be entertaining.  Below are a couple of photos and a video.  As usual, click the photos to enlarge.    Print Article:

Sandcastle Festival upgraded this year

Cobourg’s Sandcastle festival on the Saturday of the August long weekend (the 4th) will be more fun this year – there will be a live DJ (the DJ is live, not the music), free live entertainment by Mark Sepic the “Nutty Music Professor”, a Kid’s zone, an inflatable Fun Park (for $5) and of course a Sandcastle competition and Sand Sculpting Lessons.  The Schedule of events is being made available in advance (see below) and the event runs at the same time as the Downtown Sidewalk Sale so once again Cobourg should get a lot of visitors. There’s a kids movie in Victoria Park at sunset (Sherlock Gnomes) so overall it seems to be aimed at families although the Sidewalk… Read complete articleSandcastle Festival upgraded this year

Busy Day at Victoria Park and Beach

Today was another glorious summer day in Cobourg with lots happening at Victoria Park and the Beach.  In the Park, close to 200 cars participated in the Lakeside Antique and Classic Car Show, the Lawn Bowling club were hosting the Ontario Championship national qualifying lawn bowling tournament (also Saturday), the Ontario Volleyball Association had 33 courts active on the beach (continuing from Saturday), the Courtyard Cantina operated for the weekend and there was a good crowd on the beach.  However, the Water Park was not setup and the Lifeguard stations were all still the old styles.   Mysteriously, the Coast Guard moored a “Police, Marine Security” ship offshore – the local Coast Guard said that it’s nothing to do with them… Read complete articleBusy Day at Victoria Park and Beach

Canada Day in Cobourg – 2018 Details

This year, Canada Day is on a Sunday so the parade will start at 1:00 pm and not noon as usual.  The route will be the same, from five corners to Victoria Park along King Street.  Speeches will start at 2:00 pm in the bandshell and they will be followed by entertainment with the usual fireworks over the harbour at 10:00 pm.  The Midway will be located this year in Victoria Park in the South East corner.  This is because the pier is subject to an engineering review with expensive repairs likely needed.  Once again the Lions area will not charge for entry and the Rotary Arts and Crafts show will charge $5 for a day pass. Below is a… Read complete articleCanada Day in Cobourg – 2018 Details

Second Annual Gay Pride Parade

Cobourg’s Gay Community organized a Gay Pride Parade (or march) along King Street today (Saturday June 23).  Ashley Bouman (of the Cobourg Chapter of PFLAG and Pride Northumberland) and Kim McArthur-Jackson (Co-founder of the Cobourg Queer Collective) were pleased with the turnout – about 50 people participated.  Police helped by clearing the roads for the march and DBIA Chair Adam Bureau was supportive and also participated.  As well as four regular Police and one from the Auxiliary Police, five high school students from the Youth in Policing Initiative were also there.  The event started in front of Victoria Hall with some speeches by Ashley, Kim and Adam; they then marched down King to Church and finished at the “Gathering Place”… Read complete articleSecond Annual Gay Pride Parade

Cooey Collectors Day

If you are familiar with Cobourg’s history, you’ll know that Cooey had a factory in Cobourg at what was then called Factory Creek on the corner of King West and Tremaine.  A park is now being established there and is called Cooey park.  The factory manufactured rifles which were known for their safety and quality but the business was sold to Winchester in 1961 and manufacturing moved out of Cobourg in 1979.  But Cooeys have not been forgotten and the Cobourg Trap and Skeet Club in conjunction with the Northumberland Pistol and Revolver Club are holding a Collectors Day on July 7th at their location on Highway 2 at Theatre Road.  It will feature vendors, a BBQ and displays of… Read complete articleCooey Collectors Day

Cobourg’s Highland Games – 2018

The weather was perfect – sunny but not too hot and the organization worked.  Entry was $20 at the gate but few complained.  The “Games” were Highland Dance competitions, Bag Pipe band competitions and the usual “heavy” events.  In addition there were vendors selling Scottish memorabilia and there was musical entertainment.  Once again the games were in Victoria Park and once again parking was at a premium.  Unlike the Waterfront Festival, there were no shuttle busses to remote parking.  The crowds seem to come despite the increase in entry fee so this should put the Highland Games organizers on a better footing.  In 2013, they asked the Town for a loan but didn’t get it (see link below) but at… Read complete articleCobourg’s Highland Games – 2018

Beach Courtyard Summer Series

The Northumberland Local Food for Local Good (LFFLG) not for profit group organizes events that promote local, sustainable food.  Best known for their Cultivate Festival in Port Hope in September, this summer they are partnering with the Market and Smor couple, Lucas Cleveland and Montana Desjardins who operate Cobourg’s beach canteen. Starting on the weekend of July 13, 14, 15, they will turn the “courtyard” next door to the canteen into a “licensed cantina”.   Scheduled for four weekends, it will feature entertainment, local brews and wines plus food prepared by the Canteen. The event is being organized by Local Food for Local Good who will be managing drink sales while Market and Smor (aka the beach canteen) are supplying and… Read complete articleBeach Courtyard Summer Series
