A Couple of Interesting Developments

There was a public meeting last Tuesday to get input on Public thoughts on a development at 900 Division street (which also uses address 9 Elgin Street east) and separately, at the next Council meeting on September 9, Trinity Development Group who manage the Northumberland Mall property are asking for rezoning for part of their land. The 900 Division Street rezoning was approved and will be confirmed at the September 9 meeting but the change at Northumberland Mall will require a public meeting – it’s currently at an early stage.  The 900 Division street  re-zoning was to allow the conversion of an existing building on the corner property into a Medical Clinic to provide space for up to eight doctors. … Read complete articleA Couple of Interesting Developments

New Hotel planned

Cobourg’s Planning department has received a re-zoning application to allow a hotel to be built at the end of DePalma Drive between Home Depot and Walmart.  The specific hotel brand has not been revealed but the company behind the application is DePalma Developments Limited which has been active in Cobourg for some time.  It’s just at the notification stage – there will be a public meeting called before too long and more details are expected then.  The proposed Hotel will “consist of 82 hotel suites, amenity space for hotel patrons including pool, fitness centre, meeting rooms, board room, meal space, and lobby area. Spaces for hotel staff office/administrative and maintenance will also be provided”.  Below is a Google Earth map… Read complete articleNew Hotel planned

Lakefront Utilities Helps Out in Florida

With Hurricane Dorian expected to land on Florida’s east coast on Monday, local electric utilities are expecting damage to their infrastructure with many people losing their electricity service.  When Canada has a problem – usually from an ice storm in winter – American Utility companies often help out so now it’s our turn.  This morning (Friday) Cobourg’s Lakefront Utilities sent an electric line crew to Florida – no doubt wise to get there before moving around is difficult or impossible.  They will miss out on any “planned Labour Day family time to assist in whatever way they can for restoration of power.”  Every county in Florida is under a state of emergency as the state prepares for what may be… Read complete articleLakefront Utilities Helps Out in Florida

LUSI accused of grossly overcharging

In a presentation to Council on Monday August 12, Drew Macklin of William Street Brewery Co. (WSBC) plans to say that LUSI accepted their water meter’s reading despite strong evidence that it was giving faulty readings.  The cost to the fledgling craft brewery was $8,050 (plus interest which brings the total to $10,101)  – but the business has also suffered.  The overbilling started when a new water meter was installed in December 2017 and only stopped in April 2018 when the meter was replaced.  WSBC tracks water usage separately and their measurements now agree but during the 5 months of alleged overbilling they were wildly different. No leaks were found and LUSI cannot explain where the extra water went but… Read complete articleLUSI accused of grossly overcharging

New Pub on King Street

A new pub called “Taps and Corks” has opened in Downtown Cobourg – at 70 King West – and it has a new formula.  Buy your food or nibbles, maybe on King Street, and bring them in and savour a craft beer or wine.  Andee and Tracy Kitchen got the general idea of their new venture from a place in Edmonton then they researched where they wanted to set up.  They looked at a number of Ontario locations but liked Cobourg the best. Andee said that they “serve local craft beers, wines and ciders from around Ontario and provide a cool comfy place to enjoy each and every sip with your friends. … I guess you could call us a… Read complete articleNew Pub on King Street

Sustainability Committee Chair wants East Village Improvements

When the expansion of East Village was discussed in Council on 24 June, it was just about the need for a minor change to the Official Plan and a minor re-zoning change.  Despite this, Councillor Emily Chorley wanted advisory committees to be consulted about sustainability and accessibility despite the comment by Director Glenn McGlashon that there are few specifics so this would be premature.  As a result, the Sustainability and Climate Change Advisory Committee is holding a special meeting on Wednesday July 17, 2019 at 12:30 pm in the Committee Room, Victoria Hall, to consider a motion requiring very significant sustainability “improvements” to Stalwood’s plans.  Since the development is not even at site plan stage, there are no building plans… Read complete articleSustainability Committee Chair wants East Village Improvements

Student Entrepreneur Summer program – 2019

Entrepreneurship in Northumberland is alive and well – seven students were at Staples this morning where they explained what their start-up businesses were about.  Funded by the Province to the tune of $3000 for each student and organized by the County’s Business and Entrepreneurship centre, Manager Rob Day said that 142 summer businesses have been started since 2001.  The idea is that some individuals like the idea of being an entrepreneur and may well be good at it, but lack experience or financing.  The program provides first hand knowledge on what’s needed to succeed – or at least point them in the right direction.  As well as cash, the program helps them with their business plan and assesses the viability… Read complete articleStudent Entrepreneur Summer program – 2019

CFIB ranks Cobourg for Entrepreneurs

Cobourg’s size is at the lower end of the 125 cities surveyed by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) but it’s doing better than many other cities – even better than the City of Toronto and about the same as Belleville.  CFIB says that local governments “control only some of the levers that make cities work. How well these levers are used, however, can make a tremendous difference to local businesses and residents”.  But they concede that “while local governments can influence local economic activity, they can’t usually make it happen directly. For that, they need local entrepreneurs to carry the ball — those who risk their own capital, time and effort”.  But when municipal governments do it right,… Read complete articleCFIB ranks Cobourg for Entrepreneurs
