Mid-summer Council meeting decisions

Cobourg Council has fewer meetings in summer and both the July 23 and August 13 meetings are double – that is, there are back to back Committee-of-the-Whole and Regular Council meetings on those dates. There were a number of miscellaneous issues decided at the July 23 Meetings: a decision on a suggested Pedestrian crossing on King Street, approval of budget to pave some roads, an exception to the noise bylaw to allow the 401 to be repaved, final approval to go ahead with the sale of the Queen Street Parking lot, modification to the “Lame Duck” delegation by-law, improvements to accessibility of Parking Meters and progress on Traffic issues around the bottom end of Division Street.  There were also other routine… Read complete articleMid-summer Council meeting decisions

Statue of Wartime Female “Sparks” planned

Fern Blodgett Sunde could be called a heroine but she was certainly a trail-blazer – she was a Radio Operator during World War 2 when women were not allowed in the Canadian Navy, not even the Merchant Navy.  Not giving up on what she wanted to do, she signed on to a Norwegian ship and made 78 crossings of the Atlantic during the Battle of the Atlantic.  I’d call that heroic and certainly worth commemorating with a statue.  And that’s what Leona Woods wants to do, commission a statue of her and have it erected in a prominent place on Cobourg’s waterfront.  Leona has teamed up with Sudbury sculptor Tyler Fauvelle and together they made a presentation to Cobourg Council… Read complete articleStatue of Wartime Female “Sparks” planned

First Annual Firebird Bandit Run in Cobourg

The National Firebird club had its first Annual Bandit Run and Show in Cobourg – the cars entered came from as far away as Kingston, Newfoundland, Sudbury, Windsor and Niagara.  And why Cobourg?  Probably because Club Founder & Canadian National President Murray R. McMillan lives here (or nearby).  You also have to believe Victoria Park is a great venue. There were about 43 cars entered; probably more would have shown up if the weather was better. Although it rained for the run to Rhino’s in Bewdley, it was clear for the show in the afternoon. Cars were judged based on being most original and most detailed and while they were waiting for the result and a trophy, a large number of… Read complete articleFirst Annual Firebird Bandit Run in Cobourg

Cobourg Saxons Beach Rugby Festival

Despite the rain, the kids seemed to be having a good time on the East End of Cobourg’s beach today.  The Cobourg Saxons Rugby club staged a series of games for young rugby fans.  It was not publicized so the general public would not have been aware but then, it’s not really for spectators – its’ more a parents event.  However, watching little kids run around after the ball can be entertaining.  Below are a couple of photos and a video.  As usual, click the photos to enlarge.    Print Article:

Brian Darling to seek re-election

At the last election, Brian received the largest number of votes and with 7 days to go before the filing deadline he has now filed his nomination papers to seek re-election as a Councillor.  He is mostly running on the record of the current council and points to a number of achievements.  However, he says that “we are going to have some tough decisions in the near future with infrastructure improvements.  The East Pier, the Centre Pier and the Monks Cove retaining wall are just a few of the many projects that will have to be addressed.”  He also says he will “strive to maintain fiscal responsibility and keep tax increases as low as possible” and “make decisions that are… Read complete articleBrian Darling to seek re-election

Sandcastle Festival upgraded this year

Cobourg’s Sandcastle festival on the Saturday of the August long weekend (the 4th) will be more fun this year – there will be a live DJ (the DJ is live, not the music), free live entertainment by Mark Sepic the “Nutty Music Professor”, a Kid’s zone, an inflatable Fun Park (for $5) and of course a Sandcastle competition and Sand Sculpting Lessons.  The Schedule of events is being made available in advance (see below) and the event runs at the same time as the Downtown Sidewalk Sale so once again Cobourg should get a lot of visitors. There’s a kids movie in Victoria Park at sunset (Sherlock Gnomes) so overall it seems to be aimed at families although the Sidewalk… Read complete articleSandcastle Festival upgraded this year
