Unfinished Business – May 2021

The good news is that by keeping an Unfinished Business List, Town Clerk Brent Larmer is doing a good job of keeping track of the promises by Council and Staff to look after issues.  In most cases, the “business” listed was the result of a motion by Council asking a particular Department to report back to Council at a specified date.  The bad news is that target dates are often not met. But there is some progress: since September last year, three items have been completed although with new ones added the overall number of items has been fairly steady.  Transparency has improved since there are now more details in the status reports.  By my count, of the 14 projects… Read complete articleUnfinished Business – May 2021

Police Chief Dumbfounded

In a tweet late this afternoon, Cobourg Police Chief Paul Vandgraaf said  “So he is on house arrest type conditions for a multiple violent robberies … comes 2 hours to Cobourg to deal drugs, is arrested, lies to the police and is released at bail? Dumbfounded is all I can say!”  The story started yesterday when Police “commenced a drug investigation into activity at 351 John Street” and “arrested an adult male. At the time of arrest, the man was on release for numerous outstanding robbery charges stemming from a Greater Toronto Area investigation. He was also failing to abide by his condition of house arrest at the time of this interdiction.”  Not especially unusual.  They seized a quantity of… Read complete articlePolice Chief Dumbfounded

New Film Group launches in Cobourg

Film Access Northumberland is launching with a Film Festival called the Eye2Eye International Film Festival.  Scheduled for August 29, 2021, at 8 PM, it will be free and outdoors at Victoria Park.  All Covid-19 protocols will be in place so there’s little danger of cancellation.  The new Cobourg based group (Film Access Northumberland) is not affiliated with Northumberland Film Sundays or the Dressler Foundation which holds an annual Vintage Film Festival.  The group is chaired by Ross Pigeau and their board includes local film fans Chris Worsnop, Cathie Houston, Adriana Monti and Micol Marotti.  Their organization is incorporated and supported by CAMECO in Port Hope, the Town of Cobourg, the Watershed Magazine, the Art Gallery of Northumberland and the Loft… Read complete articleNew Film Group launches in Cobourg

Covid-19 Update – 12 May 2021

Our Medical Officer of Health Dr. Natalie Bocking provide an update today and although we are not “out of the woods” (my words), Dr. Bocking said we are “moving in the right direction”. Vaccinations are ramping up although most have only had one shot – 76% of those aged 60+ have had their first dose and 49% of those eligible (that’s 18+) have had one shot. The Province has paused vaccinations using the Astrazeneca vaccine due to supply issues (plus the small risk we’ve all heard about) but supplies of others – particularly the Pfizer version – are ramping up. The district has been receiving 3500 per week  but deliveries will be 4000/wk in the first 2 weeks of May, 8000/wk in the… Read complete articleCovid-19 Update – 12 May 2021

Council Meeting – May 10

Monday’s Committee of the Whole Council meeting covered a good number of issues including some interesting announcements.  CAO Tracey Vaughan gave her regular report on Cobourg’s Covid-19 status and also summarized the results of the Council’s recent review of their Strategic Plan.  With about 18 months to go in their term, there’s not really a whole lot of time to accomplish their revised goals.  A decision on what to do about managing summer beach crowds was deferred to May 31 although that will be complicated by an extension of the current lockdown to June 2.  Tracey said that she had heard that legislation has been passed to do that but as yet it has not been announced by the Premier…. Cobourg Police Annual Report

A special Council meeting was held Monday May 3rd to receive the Annual Police Report. Presentations by Chair Dean Pepper and Chief Paul Vandegraaf summarized the glossy 44 page report (see link below). The report mostly covers achievements and partners but does include some of the closely watched numbers. Because of the pandemic, some numbers were down and others increased – the virus did not stop criminals. Councillor comments after the presentations praised Police performance, the use of tiered Policing and asked about body-worn cameras and what was being done about graffiti – more on this below. The force – sorry, “Service” – consists of 18 Auxiliary Police (volunteers), 20 Special Constables as well as 35 “sworn” or regular constables…. Read complete articleCobourg Police Annual Report

Cobourg Cultural Community Lobbies for Action on Brookside

A group of 14 of Cobourg’s Community organizations have joined together to ask MPP David Piccini to support re-development of Brookside and Strathmore House into multi-purpose spaces that would meet the growing needs of Cobourg’s Cultural organizations.  They have jointly submitted a letter that describes their ideas and needs and although no numbers were provided, they say that some groups are currently paying over $1,000/month for storage and rehearsal space that is not suitable to their needs. Their letter concludes: “With Strathmore House at the centre, we believe the repurposing of Brookside Youth Centre could become a vibrant cultural hub that inspires collaboration, facilitates a platform for cross sector partnerships and stimulates multi-generational learning opportunities for members, Cobourg residents and… Read complete articleCobourg Cultural Community Lobbies for Action on Brookside

Are Sidewalks Good for Cobourg

At the risk of flogging a dead horse but hopefully providing a summary and “last word” on the subject, it’s worth reporting details about a memo from the Sustainability and Climate Change Action [Advisory] Committee (SCCAC) that was provided to Council at the last Council meeting. The Committee was strongly supportive of providing sidewalks everywhere in Town. This year will see a sidewalk built on Abbott Blvd against the wishes of some but not all residents on that street.  I will attempt to summarize SCAAC’s reasoning plus the history of the issue plus where Councillors and staff stand on the issue.  In the future (that’s what we used to say before “going forward” became fashionable), deciding whether to construct a… Read complete articleAre Sidewalks Good for Cobourg
